The Old Thomians Rugby Football Union (OTRFU) was set up in 1994 with the intention of creating a fellowship of all Thomians who played rugby for college at any age level, thereby getting the support of all past rugby players to support college to develop and maintain the standard of the game of rugby.
The OTRFU is the brain child of the late Nihal ‘Baila’ Samarasinghe, a colourful Thomian rugby stalwart during his day. His vision was to keep the passion for rugby alive in all Thomians who played the game in school, even after they parted from the corridors of college; thereby making sure that all former rugby players will actively participate in keeping the passion for rugby alive at St. Thomas’.
Membership at OTRFU is open for all old Thomians who have represented college in Rugby at any age group.

Junior Rugby Carnival
The Thomian Junior Rugby Carnival which is an annual event, will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, is yet another initiative of the OTRFU. Envisioned by Shanaka de Liveira, a celebrated rugby player in his heyday, together with the support of the OTRFU members made sure that rugby is a sport kids would like to take to, from the age of 10 onwards. Since its inception in 1997, the Thomian Rugby Carnival has been a big success, nurturing the passion for the sport from a very young age.

Old Boys vs Present Boys Matches
The traditional encounter between the Old Boys and Present boys is a much looked forward to match at the end of the season. Played for the Late Flt. Lt. Jason Martenstyn Trophy (Member of the 1990 unbeaten Thomian Rugby team), donated by his mother Mrs. Drukie Martenstyn who graces the occasion as Chief Guest. After the battle between Old and Present the OTRFU hosts the College 1st XV pool to a dinner and social.

Rugby Dinner
The OTRFU has organised the Rugby Dinner to host the College 1st XV team and also to honour past greats, old boys coach’s who have contributed towards the game of Rugby at STC. There are plans a foot to host another major Dinner Dance by the OTRFU this year and will be different for the other years but with emphasis given to ensuring we keep the idea of supporting college Rugby.
